Born and raised in Victoria, Ryan grew up in the neighbourhood of Broadmead. While staying in the community to pursue his athletic career, he received a BA in Psychology from UVic, and later a Professional Certification in Project Management from Stanford University.

Considered one of the best athletes of his generation, Ryan represented Canada at 3 Olympic Games, winning 2 Olympic medals in the process. During his tenure as an athlete, Ryan was dedicated and driven towards results, always striving for excellence and professionalism.
